Fables of the Reconstruction: New Collage Paintings by William Hudders

Known for his work as a masterful oil painter, William Hudders embarks on a new approach to visual narration through a series of ambitious collage paintings featured here in "Fables of the Reconstruction".

Hudders’s continual exploration of new visual worlds has resulted in this series of large-scale, surreally storied collage paintings. This series diverts from his previous work of realistically painted images, and invites an element of unpredictability and chance that comes from sourcing pre-fabricated materials from magazines and books. Hudders employs an intuitive process of both seeking out images and letting the found images guide the compositions. Only as the layering of images progress - softened and developed by washes of acrylic color - does the meaning or theme of each image begin to reveal itself. The result is a dizzying, dancing, Bosch-esque panorama of scenes within scenes.

Born and raised in Emmaus, Pennsylvania, William Hudders graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1986 and received his MFA in Painting from University of Pennsylvania in 1991. Hudders has been painting professionally for over twenty-five years, exhibiting his work in many solo and group exhibitions throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. During the 1990's he worked briefly in New York for Jeff Koons. His work is included in the collections of the Allentown Art Museum, Lehigh Valley Hospital, Citibank Collection in New York, and in the private collections of Mario Andretti and Tommy Hilfiger among others. He currently teaches at Northampton Community College in Bethlehem, PA and works out of his studio in downtown Easton, PA.
