Pottery: Alternative Firings

Instructor

Christopher Sarley

Students will learn the skills necessary to throw pottery and explore alternative firing techniques. Students will learn surface preparation by burnishing and the application of terra sigillata. Finally, pieces will be fired using alternative firing techniques of Obvara, an Eastern European process of sealing pottery, and horsehair firing, a process originating with the Native Americans.

Intro to Jewelry & Metalsmithing

In this introductory course, students will discover the working properties of non-ferrous metals and experiment with a range of metalsmithing fabrication techniques, while working with a variety of specialized hand tools, equipment, and torches. This class covers all of the basics, including: soldering, annealing, forming, cold joinery, bezel setting, finishing, and workshop safety. Students are encouraged to take this class several times before moving up to Int. & Adv. Jewelry & Metalsmithing.

Landscape Painting

This class will introduce students to the fundamentals of landscape painting. Through skill building exercises in value, composition, design, drawing, and color mixing, students will gain a thorough understanding of the essentials needed to paint landscapes. For the first few weeks, students will work from their own photos sources and ones provided by the instructor. Students will also be tasked with doing a master copy of a painting of their choice. Toward the end of the semester, if weather permits, classes will be spent plein air painting at various Lehigh Valley locations. Though oil painting techniques will be primarily discussed and demonstrated, any medium is welcome.
